Earlier this month, Bill Miller, President and CEO of the American Gaming Association (AGA), published a blog commemorating the fourth anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision to strike the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA). This decision precipitated the meteoric growth of the commercial gaming industry as states across the U.S. legalized gambling. As we celebrate the gaming industry's success, it would be worthwhile to look back and investigate how we got here.
In his blog, Miller looks back at the growth of the gaming industry through five statistics that illustrate the industry's current state. Miller notes that 35 states and Washington D.C. have legalized gambling, which jumped from just a few after the PASPA decision. Miller states that 73% of American adults support legal gaming, reflecting the widespread support for legalization. Americans have wagered a combined $125.4 billion in the past four years. Miller said that gaming companies, sports leagues, teams, and media companies formed 310 partnerships to create greater value for the organizations and patrons. Finally, 28 organizations have partnered with the AGA's Have A Game Plan® initiative to promote responsible gaming practices and resources.
